Water Heater Maintenance Tips

5/2/2022 (Permalink)

Grey Water Heater SERVPRO of Wheaton / Glen Ellyn / Lisle responds to water damage emergencies 24-hours a day.

Springtime is a great time to check on your water heater.  Water damage can happen quickly, and it is important to make sure that it is in good working condition.

Here are some tips to inspect and maintain your water heater from the Insurance Institute of Business and Home Safety (IBHS):

  • Inspect your anode rod every two years, or every year once the warranty has expired, to determine if it needs to be replaced.
  • Flush water heater tanks every six months to remove sediment by attaching a garden hose to the valve at the base. For safety, first turn off the power and run hot water until it is cool.
  • Get an annual inspection from a plumbing professional including the shut-off valve and all piping. Signs of broken valves and loose or wet joints and rust are a sign that more severe damage is coming.

If you experience water damage, SERVPRO of Wheaton / Glen Ellyn / Lisle has a team of highly trained professionals to help 24-hours a day.  Please contact us at 630-384-1040.

Water damage can occur at any time. Here are some tips from the American Red Cross to follow in the event of water damage to your business or home:

  • Pump out flooded basements gradually (about one-third of the water per day) to avoid structural damage.
  • Bring all soft items outside if possible – sunlight and wind will help them dry faster
  • Throw out items that have absorbed water and cannot be cleaned or disinfected
  • Remove all drywall and insulation that has been in contact with floodwaters
  • Consider removing vinyl floor coverings and tile to allow the substructures beneath or behind them to dry
  • Keep the windows open and run fans – or keep them shut and run dehumidifiers to pull moisture out of wood floors and subfloors, beams, doors, etc.

If you experience water damage in your home or business, SERVPRO of Wheaton / Glen Ellyn / Lisle wants to help. Our highly trained water restoration technicians are available 24-hours a day. Call us at 630-384-1040 to find out about our cleanup and restoration services.

Water Damage Cleanup

2 pictures of damage hardwood floor before and after the cleanup Sometimes it's too late to salvage, but there is always room for improvement!

Last week we received a call from one a customer who needed help cleaning up an old mess.  Earlier in 2021 their basement had a small flood which ruined their hardwood floors.  Unfortunately SERVPRO was not called in time to help save these hardwood floors and the damage was unrepairable.  Though we could not restore the original flooring, we were able to salvage what we can and cleanup the rest.

The photo provided is a before-and-after shot of an area we cleaned up.  As you can see we were able to manipulate the content, rearrange items and make things much more presentable and safe for passage.

We are always happy to help cleanup situations like these, though we always encourage customers to try to call us with the first 24-48 hours of a flood in order to help restore the damage before it is too late!

  • Caulk and seal windows to guard against water seepage.
  • Inspect your roof for missing, damaged and aging shingles and make necessary repairs.
  • Check your downspouts. Remove debris that may have accumulated in downspouts and rain gutters. Position downspouts so that they direct water away from the house.
  • Check sprinklers and irrigation systems to be sure they are not creating water damage to the walls and foundations of the house. Turn off and drain outside faucets to protect against frozen pipes.
  • Install gutter guards to prevent gutter clogs and keep water flowing away from the house instead of accumulating on the roof.

Tips to Avoid a Soggy Disaster in Wheaton

1/3/2022 (Permalink)

Turning page of a book with an orange SERVPRO logo. Follow these tips to keep your belongings safe from water damage.

Water damage is one of the most common disasters that your home can experience.  Our homes are filled with many items that range from household items, toys, games, books, and many treasured heirlooms.  It is important to take steps to protect these items in case you experience water damage in your home.

Here are a few tips from the Insurance Information Institute to avoid a soggy disaster:

  • Store off-season and other bulk belongings in waterproof bins, especially in areas where there are plumbing pipes or that are prone to dampness, such as basements and attics.
  • Never store valuables or memorabilia where there is a risk of destruction from water. Water and dampness also bring with it the threat of mold damage.
  • Keep belongings stored on shelving off the floor in basements. In case of water seepage or sewer backup, they're less likely to get damaged.
  • Keep an up-to-date home inventory. Having a comprehensive list of your possessions will save time, trouble, and stress in case of loss from water damage.

A Small Leak Can Make a Big Mess

6/2/2021 (Permalink)

A white bathroom sink with a gray stone backsplash and a white candle. SERVPRO of Wheaton / Glen Ellyn / Lisle has a team of water restoration technicians available 24 hours a day.

A leaky ice maker, a broken supply line to the washing machine, or a sink backup that overflows on the bathroom floor.  These are just some of the many causes of water damage that can happen in your home.  The following are a few tips from the Insurance Information Institute to maintain your indoor plumbing systems:

  • Inspect appliance hoses and faucets.  Make it a practice every year to check hoses leading to water heaters, dishwashers, washing machines and refrigerator ice makers.  You may also want to invest in a water leak monitoring and shut-off system that can alert you to any leakage issues.  Immediately replace any hoses that have cracks or leaks.
  • Inspect showers and tubs.  Check the seal and caulking around showers and tubs to make sure they are watertight and reseal if necessary.
  • When away on vacation, shut off the water supply to the washing machine and never leave the house while the washer or dishwasher is running.
  • Know the location of the main water shut-off valve in your home.  A damaged hose or a burst pipe can send water racing into your home.  Being able to locate and shut off the main water supply quickly will save stress, money and time.
  • Install an emergency pressure release valve in your plumbing system.  This will protect against the increased pressure caused by freezing pipes and can help prevent your pipes from bursting.
  • Check plumbing and heating pipes.  Look closely for cracks and leaks and have any necessary repairs made immediately.

SERVPRO of Wheaton / Glen Ellyn / Lisle has highly trained technicians that are available 24 hours a day to help with any type of water damage emergency.  Please contact us at 630-384-1040.

Keep your Basement Dry

4/13/2021 (Permalink)

Standing water on the floor with debris on the floor and a doorway at the bottom of a stairway. SERVPRO of Wheaton / Glen Ellyn / Lisle is available 24 hours a day to respond to your water damage.

Spring has sprung in the Chicagoland area and with it comes rainy days.  One of the places to keep an eye out for water leaks is in your basement.  Basement seepage is a common problem and with a little advanced planning can easily be avoided.  Here are a few tips form the Insurance Information Institute for preventing basement water seepage:

  • Make sure water drains away from the building. Seepage is exacerbated by soil that has settled in a way to make water flow toward the building. After a storm, and especially if the ground is already saturated, rainwater that flows towards the building goes down the outside of the foundation wall potentially through any cracks.
  • Reseal your basement. Water in the basement is often caused by cracks in building foundations or floor slabs. If you notice water seepage after heavy rain when you've never had a problem, it may mean that your once-waterproof cement floors and basement walls have deteriorated. Painting vulnerable areas with water sealant can prevent seepage.

If you experience water damage in your home, SERVPRO of Wheaton / Glen Ellyn / Lisle has a team of highly trained technicians to assist you.  We are available 24 hours a day.  You can reach us at 630-384-1040.

Unseen Water can cause Damage to your Home or Business

12/17/2020 (Permalink)

SERVPRO employee holding a yellow water meter in a basement with wet walls. SERVPRO of Wheaton / Glen Ellyn / Lisle has highly trained technicians available 24 hours a day.

Unseen water causes some of the most invasive damage that can happen to a structure, and the longer the water damage goes undetected or unresolved, the higher the repair costs will be.  This is because water, when left to its own devices, will seep and soak into everything in its path.  Floors, subfloors, floor joists, drywall, insulation, are just some of the areas that water can travel.  After the water leak is identified and corrected, there may be several structural repairs that will need to be addressed.

Fortunately, SERVPRO of Wheaton / Glen Ellyn / Lisle has extensive experience mitigating water damage, and we have a team of highly trained water restoration technicians available 24 hours a day to respond to your call.  Glen Ellyn residents and business owners know that they can count on us to quickly and safely restore their water-damaged property to preloss condition quickly and efficiently.

An outside water spigot leading to a leaky water pipe inside a house. If you experience water damage in your home or business, SERVPRO of Wheaton / Glen Ellyn / Lisle can respond quickly.

Plumbing problems can occur at any moment and a broken pipe is a common problem that homeowners face every day.

SERVPRO of Wheaton / Glen Ellyn / Lisle has been helping Chicagoland residents repair water damage for years.  We have seen all kinds of water damage, and we have the training, experience, and equipment to restore any water damage emergency you face.  Many plumbing companies suggest these are the top six reasons pipes burst:

  1. Freezing
  2. Tree root encroachment
  3. Corrosion
  4. Soil Shifting
  5. High water pressure
  6. Clogs

Many of these examples can be prevented through routine inspection and maintenance of your pipes.  Water pipes, if not properly maintained and insulated, can become a costly repair later and in some cases can even destroy your home.  Moisture attracts mold growth, and water leaks over time can compromise the structural integrity of your home.

SERVPRO - Sewage Cleanup and Restoration

Two SERVPRO employees cleaning up water with water damage in green letters and a SERVPRO house logo on the bottom. If you experience a sewer backup - call SERVPRO of Wheaton / Glen Ellyn / Lisle at 630-384-1040.

Sewer backups should be considered an emergency since the water may contain viruses, bacteria, and other microbes that cause serious illnesses.  SERVPRO of Wheaton / Glen Ellyn / Lisle has specialized training and equipment to quickly and safely clean contaminants like sewage.

Water damage can be classified by the three types of contaminated water.  SERVPRO of Wheaton / Glen Ellyn / Lisle will inspect your home or business to determine the appropriate plan of action for the type of water encountered.

The three types of contaminated water:

Category 1: "Clean Water"

Category 1 water is from a clean source like a broken water supply line or leaking faucet.  If not treated quickly, this water can turn into category 2 or 3, depending on length of time, temperature, and contact with surrounding contaminants.

  • Water from a clean source like a broken water line
  • If left untreated, can degrade into category 2 or 3

Category 2: "Gray Water"

Category 2 water is contaminated and could cause discomfort or illness.  Examples include washing machine overflow; toilet overflow with some urine, but no feces; or dishwasher overflow.

  • May contain bacteria and viruses
  • Can quickly degrade into category 3 if left untreated

Category 3: "Black Water"

Category 3 water is grossly contaminated and could cause severe illness or death if ingested and any contact should be avoided.  Examples include flooding from rivers or streams, water from beyond the toilet trap, water from the toilet bowl with feces, or standing water that has begun to support microbial growth.

  • May contain untreated sewage, harsh chemicals, and microbes
  • Water from flooding rivers or sewer backup

Preventing Frozen Pipes

12/11/2019 (Permalink)

Copper water pipe on a red brick wall with frozen icicles hanging down. Avoid frozen water pipes with these tips.

Freezing cold temperatures are reaching the Chicagoland area early this year.  Your home or business may be at risk for frozen pipes which can cause water damage to your property.

Frozen pipes are often those exposed to the cold weather, such as those outside your house, or in cold areas such as basements, attics, garages or kitchen cabinets.  A frozen pipe can burst at the point where the ice blockage inside the pipe is located, but typically the rupture is caused by the backflow pressure between the water source and the blockage.  A burst pipe can cause considerable damage to your property if not addressed quickly. To prevent pipes from freezing, here are a few steps you can take, according to The American Red Cross.

  • Be sure to completely drain water from swimming pool and sprinkler lines.
  • Remove, drain, and store hoses used outdoors.
  • Open kitchen cabinets to let warm air circulate near the plumbing.
  • When the weather is extremely cold, let water drip from faucets; running water is less likely to freeze.
  • Keep your heat set to the same temperature both day and night.

If your home or business has damage caused by winter weather, please call SERVPRO of Wheaton / Glen Ellyn / Lisle at (630) 384-1040.

Water in Finished Basement in Wheaton

6/25/2019 (Permalink)

“I have water in my finished basement. What do I do?”

“I have water in my finished basement. What do I do?”

We don’t recommend just using your shop vacuum or mopping the visible water up and calling it a day. There are so many different variables to consider such as:

Where has the water traveled?

  • If your second-floor bathroom experienced water damage, the water can travel through the floor and affect first floor rooms.
  • If your finished basement has water damage, the water can soak up in the drywall and insulation behind the wall.
  • Water dripping in your bedroom could be coming in from the roof and affect insulation and roof in your attic.

All these undetected areas, if not dried properly, can become an environment for microbial growth (MOLD!) and avoiding growth is why you should call an IICRC trained firm to inspect the property to see just where the water has traveled.

You can call SERVPRO of Wheaton/Glen Ellyn/Lisle 24/7 at 630-384-1040 to discuss the process of cleaning and drying out your property after water intrusion in your home or business.

Why to call a Professional After a Water Damage

3/29/2019 (Permalink)

After a water damage, calling a professional restoration provider is essential to confirming that property damage is properly handled.

Many people try to handle things themselves these days.  Watching a video or reading an article and online and suddenly, everyone is an expert.  Professional training, years of experience, and hundreds of projects cannot be replaced by a five-minute video.

Using Experienced Restoration Professionals Makes a Difference

When you call SERVPRO of Wheaton / Glen Ellyn / Lisle, the team members who respond to your water emergency know where to look, how to identify issues, and what steps need to be taken.  In the case of the photo above, many people forget to look behind, underneath, or seek areas where water may have settled.  This is important to identify, as water can damage wood and other materials, developing into mold and creating long-term issues.

When you call SERVPRO of Wheaton / Glen Ellyn / Lisle, we understand how to help, and we take the steps necessary to minimize damage, handling the project quickly, professionally, and thoroughly.
